POEtry 40, 69 & 138 freewheel manuals

The following manual will guide you through the disassembly and assembly of our current hubs line up by the easiest way. if you own a universal bearing tool kit such as Parktool or Enduro Bearings kit, feel free to use it. The tool kit used in the manual below is 3D printed with PLA, the file can be downloaded for free below in the tool list (just click on the TOOL you need) if you have a 3D printer. If your hubset uses shims and have a blue, black, or gold freehub body, please use the Kill/Climbhill, Prince/ss manuals.

About POE (point of engagement) : More POE means quicker engagement of the freewheel when you restart pedaling. The drawback is that it slightly increases the drag when you are coasting (not pedaling).

On the other hand, fewer POEs require a larger pedal rotation angle to engage, but you get less drag resistance while freewheeling.

To put numbers to it: 69 POE leads to a 5.22° gap between engagement points, whereas 138 POE reduces it to just 2.61°. Therefore, a smaller gap means you have to turn the crank less before your hub engages again.

Tools, parts and consumables needed

Tool list :

  • 3D Printed Tune tool kit (on the photo, from left to right, TOOL 1, TOOL 2 and TOOL 3)
  • Plastic or soft rubber hammer
  • Big allen key with a flat end (size from 6mm is working as long at least 15cm long)
  • Flat screw driver (only for 15mm boost front hub)

Parts and consumables :

  • Parts needed (see each step for parts reference)
  • Mounting paste (Molycote G rapid plus paste or similar)
  • Grease (Molycote Longterm 2 plus, Dumond freehub grease or oil, or similar)

Identify your freehub

To use the right manual, please identify before the freehub type you are using.

The two on the left are Shimano HG and Sram XDR, and they use the same construction.

The two on the right are Shimano Microspline (MS) and Campagnolo N3W, and they use the same construction. Assembly and disassembly of those require a inner snap ring plier.

POEtry 69 to 138 to 69

1) Place the spring with long flat side toward the bearing, and the opening on top.

2) Lubricate the pawl seat and place the pawl over the spring. The teeth of the pawl must be like on the picture.

3) With a flat screw driver, compress the spring and push down the pawl. Repeat 3 times.

4) To go from 138 to 69, take care to let a free space between every pair like on the photo.

Disassembly step 1 : Remove end caps

Use the allen key through to hub to remove one end cap then the other.

Disassembly step 2 : Axle & disc side bearing disassembly, freehub removal

Put the hub disc side on tool 1. Put tool 2 on the axle. Hammer it gently until the axle isn’t in the free wheel body any more.

Then, remove the freehub and take care to not lose any spring or pawls.

Disassembly step 3 : Remove axle and bearing

Pull the axle out of the hub body by pulling by hand.

Then, remove the bearing from the axle by pulling by hand.

Assembly step 1 : New freehub installation

Apply grease on the teeth of the teeth ring (Molycote Longterm 2 plus, Dumonde PRO X Freehub grease, or Dumonde freehub oil). All teeth should be greasy.

Put the new freehub on the hub by turning it counter-clockwise to help the pawls getting into place.

Assembly step 2 : Drive side end cap installation

Align the sleeve inside the freehub. Place the drive side endcap on the freewheel. The hub should lay on this non-disc side end cap on a non-marring surface as wood or high density plastic Then hammer the axle gently until it goes all the way through.

Assembly step 3 : Disc side bearing installation

Place the hub directly on the work bench. The hub should lay on this non disc side end cap on a non-marring surface as wood or high density plastic. Place the disc side bearing on the axle.

Warning : For Enduro Bearing Abec 5 steel bearing Put the blue seal on the outside of the hub.

Place tool 3 on the bearing. Hammer it gently. As on the other side it should come in straight. If not, remove it and start again.

Assembly step 4: Disc side end cap installation

Take the second end cap, place it on the axle and hammer it gently.

Well done, you just finished servicing your rear hub. Let’s go outside and enjoy your ride.


2) Freewheel disassembly & assembly

HG/XDR Disassembly step 1: Remove external bearing & inner sleeve

This step could be a bit tricky. Place the big allen key inside the free wheel by shifting the sleeve. And press out the bearing while hammering the inner ring of the bearing at many places. 

HG/XDR Disassembly step 2: Remove internal bearing

Place the free wheel on tool 1 to use it as a base. Use the rear axle as a tool with a hammer to gently push the last bearing out.

Bearing kit for rear hub : BNZ0520

You just finished unbuilding your free wheel. Make sure that everything is nice and clean. You can wipe them with a rag and isopropanol. Be careful to not use any product that can wear parts or coating.Inspect every part to see if there is abnormal whearout. HG/XDR Assembly step 1 : Bearing installation

Apply mounting paste on both bearing seats.
Depending on the year you may have two different types of bearings here on the inside side of the free wheel

- Enduro Bearing Abec 5 steel bearing : put the blue seal on the outside.
- Tune Bearing : put the green seal on the outside. 

Place the free wheel on tool 1. Put the inside bearing on the bearing seat.
Place tool 3 and tool 2 on the bearing and hammer it gently.
The bearing should take place straight into the free wheel. If it starts to slide in, not straight, put the bearing out and start again.

HG/XDR Assembly step 2 : Put back the inner sleeve

Install the tool 2 inside the freewheel to use it as a guide for the sleeve. Drop the inner sleeve inside.

HG/XDR Assembly step 3 : Bearing installation

Place the bearing on the bearing seat, then place the tool 3 on top of it.

Hammer it gently it should fit inside straight.

Well done, you just finished servicing your freewheel. Let’s go outside and enjoy your ride

MS/N3W Disassembly step 1 : Bearing, inner sleeve and snap ring removal

This step could be a bit tricky. Place the big allen key inside the free wheel by shifting the sleeve. And press out the bearing while hammering the inner ring of the bearing at many places.

Then, remove the inner sleeve and the snap ring

MS/N3W Disassembly step 2 : Bearing removal

Place the free wheel on tool 1 to use it as a base. Use the rear axle as a tool to hammer gently the last bearing out. Then pull the removed bearing from the axle by pulling by hand.

You just finished unbuilding your free wheel. Make sure that everything is nice and clean. You can wipe them with a fabric tissue and isopropanol. Be careful to not use any product that can wear parts or coating.Inspect every part to see if there is abnormal whearout. MS/N3W Assembly step 1 : Bearing installation 1/2

Place tool 2 inside the free wheel as a guide. Place the Bearing on the first bearing seat.Hammer the bearing seat gently with tool 3 until it passes through the first bearing seat. The bearing should be between the two bearing seats at this point.

MS/N3W Assembly step 2 : Bearing installation 2/2

Do the assembly of the tools 1 and 3  like in the following pictures.

Then use the tool 2 and your rear axle to press the first bearing all the way through. The tool assembly will help you to guide the bearing straight inside the external side bearing seat.

MS/N3W Assembly step 3 : Snap ring and inner sleeve installation

Install the snap ring with the plier, then install the plastic tool inside the freewheel and drop the inner sleeve inside.

MS/N3W Assembly step 4 : Bearing installation

Depending on the year you may have two different types of bearings here on the inside side of the free wheel. 

- Enduro Bearing Abec 5 steel bearing : put the blue seal on the outside.
- Tune Bearing : put the green seal on the outside.

Place the bearing on the bearing seat.
Place tool 3 on top of it.

Hammer it gently, it should fit inside straight.
